I recently got the chance to meet with my local MP, Kevin Hollinrake (Malton & Thirsk), to discuss priorities for local businesses.
Having founded his own business and grown it successfully, Kevin knows all too well some of the challenges facing those in the business community. He was keen to hear stories and to do all he could to help local businesses with some of their challenges, such as:
* Red tape
* Burden of tax on smaller businesses relative to large corporates
* Slow broadband
* Difficulties getting through to, and getting sense out of HMRC.
We found we had a lot in common in caring about education; he speaks for Founders For Schools and I do for Speakers For Schools, and Kevin is hoping to be able to attend the York heat of the ICAEW BASE game for sixth formers.
I was particularly pleased to hear that Kevin and his office are ready to help in really practical ways with access to Broadband and in unblocking blockages with HMRC. Next year will see a further rollout of faster broadband locally with solutions extending to wireless and “satellite” alternatives for those beyond the reach of the usual fibre.
This is all to the good in helping our clients work more efficiently and get ready for HMRC’s Digital Tax Accounts by moving to cloud software.
Clients and others can help themselves and others by raising issues with their MPs where you get stuck with a problem including problems with HMRC or with broadband.
Kevin and I agreed to keep in touch and I look forward to having more news and I was delighted to be able to wish him well in his new role.
