We are proud at Approachable Accountants to be the first small firm nationally to take part in a new initiative called “Access Accountancy”. The professional bodies and several international firms have set up this scheme to help students from poorer backgrounds into the accounting profession.

The scheme will create work experience placements and provide other support to students from poorer backgrounds as defined by eligibility for free school meals.

We are passionate about social mobility, the ability for individuals or families to move up or down the social ladder on merit. Our profession is all too often regarded as remote and exclusive, yet some of the highest performers I have known have come from less privileged backgrounds. There is nothing more satisfying than helping ambitious, capable people to fulfil their potential, especially when they have overcome difficulties to do it.

Social mobility injects hope into our society.  It brings intelligence and diversity of perspective to decision making so that decisions benefit a greater proportion of our population. It helps social cohesion and harmony and reduces fear and friction.

A society with social mobility is fairer, happier and, with better decisions, ultimately more competitive and successful.

I look forward to working with Access Accountancy and to helping students from poorer backgrounds gain meaningful work experience.

Great to hear you are the first small firm to take part in Access Accountancy.

Agree whole heartedly with you: “There is nothing more satisfying than helping ambitious, capable people to fulfil their potential, especially when they have overcome difficulties to do it”.

Keep up the great work, Gill

Thanks Gill, about to put up a poster with details and advertise for some work experience candidates, fingers crossed…

  2. As I started reading your blog I was very clear with what you want to say. But as I went reading it further I understood that I was partially correct. Your blog made me understand more about the topic.
